Week One:

Tue. Feb. 13Intro to American Journalism. Interviewing workshop/icebreaker on Jan Term course experiences.

Assignment due Thur. From notes you took during the interview workshop/icebreaker, write a 300-350 word feature on Jan Term experiences at SMC, using examples of three unusual Jan Term classes. Make your article as descriptive and informative as possible. Give it a headline, photo, more-tag and POST it on the front of your site. Read pages 14,15 Inside Reporting.

Thur. Feb. 15 – Basics of writing for online and print. Exercise: Class will attend Darker Shades of Red Public Opening at Br. Cornelius Art Center 

Assignment due Tue. Read pages 120-121 Inside Reporting. Then, from the notes you took at the Darker Shades of Red Public Opening, write a 300-350 word feature on this new exhibit at SMC. Be entertaining and informative. Give it a headline, photo (must be one you took, with caption), more tag and POST it on the front of your site.

Week Two:

Tue. Feb. 20 – Today’s changing media landscape

Assignment due Thur. Read pages 4-10 of Reuters Digital News ProjectChoose a talking point (i.e. fake news, media and technology, generating revenue…) and prepare to give a 2 minute presentation (using video, slides, other multimedia).

Thur. Feb. 22– Today’s media landscape – Student-led discussion.

Assignment due Tue. Read Pages 18-21 Inside Reporting. Bring two news articles to class that pass the ‘impact test’. Be ready to discuss in front of the class. Extra Credit: Attend Feb. 27 lecture by #metoo founder Tarana Burke and write a 300-350 word news article, with photo, to POST on your site by Mar. 1.

Week Three:

*Mon. Feb 26 – 6-8:30 p.m. Attend Fake News and the Future of Media lecture. Must register beforehand.

Tue. Feb. 27 – What is news and how is it generated? In class ‘impact test’ on select stories.

Assignment due Thur. Study for quiz 1 (quiz will test what you’ve learned thus-far from readings and in-class discussions and history of journalism slide presentation). Read Pages 38-42 Inside Reporting.

Thur. Mar. 1 –  QUIZ 1. Newsroom lingo & tools. Newswriting basics.

Assignment due Tue. Article 1 due Tuesday – a 300-350 word article on the lecture Fake News and the Future of Media. *See grading page for criteria. Post on your website with photo (one you took) and caption.

Week Four:

Tue. Mar. 6 – Lead writing bootcamp.

Assignment due Thur. Read and review pages 46,47 Inside Reporting

Thur. Mar. 8 – Story structure, editing and re-writes. (5 reasons to hit DELETE)

Assignment due Tue.  Read pages 50,51,and 53 Inside Reporting

Week Five:

Tue. Mar. 13 – smart phone photo workshop

Assignment due Thur.  As a tribute to April Fools day, embed a collage into your multimedia page, with captions, of 10 iPhone photos that tell the spooky story of Haunted SMC. Study for quiz 2 (quiz will test what you’ve learned since Mar. 1 from readings and in-class discussions).

Thur. Mar. 15 – QUIZ 2. Investigative journalism

Assignment due Tue. Read pages 70-72 Inside Reporting. Find and research an example of investigative journalism. Be prepared to give a 2 minute presentation (using video, slides, other multimedia).

Week Six:

Tue. Mar. 20 – Student-led discussion: Investigative journalism

Assignment due Thur.  Read pages 140-149 Inside Reporting. Pick a talking point (i.e. libel, plagiarism, fabrication, bias…) and be prepared to give an example in a 2 minute presentation (using video, slides, other multimedia).

Thur. Mar. 22 – Student-led discussion: Law and ethics

Week Seven:

Tue. Mar. 27 – Midterm break.

Thur. Mar. 29 –Midterm break.

Week Eight:

Tue. Ap. 3 – Beyond Breaking News: Features and multimedia. Guest speaker: SFChronicle.com Producer Tim O’Rourke.

Assignment due Thur. On your GUESTS page, write a 300-350 word recap of what you learned from Tim O’Rourke, with headline and photo you took. Read pages 172-173 Inside Reporting.

 Thur. Ap. 5 – Launch of SMC Today radio news magazine and podcast

Assignment due Tue. Work on your radio segments, which must be recorded and uploaded to google drive by classtime Thursday.

Week Nine:

Tue. Ap. 10 – Broadcast Journalism: Guest speaker: KCBS news anchor Stan Bunger

Assignment due Thur. On your GUESTS page, write a 300-350 word recap of what you learned from Stan Bunger, with headline and photo you took. All audio segments to be uploaded to google drive by classtime.

Thur. Ap. 12 – Work on SMC Today and brainstorm next week’s show

Assignment due Tue. Work on your radio segments, which must be recorded and uploaded to google drive by classtime Thursday. Research Wendy Tokuda and send me one thoughtful question you’d like to ask her. In the same email, send me a 50 word analysis of week one of SMC Today – after listening to the entire show.

Week 10:

Tue. Ap. 17 – TV News. Guest: TV news anchor/documentarian Wendy Tokuda

Assignment due Thur. On your GUESTS page, write a 300-350 word recap of what you learned from Wendy Tokuda, with headline and photo you took. All audio segments to be uploaded to google drive by classtime.

Thur. Ap. 19 – Work on SMC Today and brainstorm next week’s show

Assignment due Tue. Read pages 184-185 Inside Reporting.

Week 11:

Tue. Ap. 24 – Public Relations. Guest: Prof. Dennis Erokan

Assignment due Thur. On your GUESTS page, write a 300-350 word article on what you learned from Dennis Erokan, with headline and photo you took. OR…accept an assignment and write an article for the Collegian. All audio segments to be uploaded to google drive by classtime.

Thur Ap. 26 – Work on SMC Today and brainstorm next week’s show

Assignment due Tue. Work on your radio segments, which must be recorded and uploaded to google drive by classtime Thursday. Study for quiz 3 on readings and class notes from March 15 going forward.

Week 12:

Tue. May 2 – Quiz 3. Work on SMC Today

Assignment due Thur.  All audio segments to be uploaded to google drive by classtime.

Thur. May 4 – In class interview segment. Work on SMC Today and brainstorm next week’s show.

Assignment due Tue. Work on your radio segments, which must be recorded and uploaded to google drive by classtime Thursday.

Week 13:

Tue. May 8 – Digital media and TV reporting – Guests Candice Nguyen and Ryan Moran ’17 of KTVU

Assignment due Thur. Your choice: Either write a  350 word article recapping Nguyen and Moran’s tips on your guest page by class time May 15 or write a 350 word profile on a Saint Mary’s student, staff member or professor. (See me for profile writing tips). All audio segments to be uploaded to google drive by classtime.

Thur. May 10 – SMC Today final analysis and production day

Assignment due Tue. 350 word Profile or 350 word KTVU guest article due by class time.

Tue. May 15 – Campus events and/or Gaels baseball Game

Assignment due Thur. On the assignment page, write an approx. 300 word article, using list style, detailing what a journalism student can learn from 5 weeks of producing a radio news magazine like SMC Today. Include a breakdown of the segments in week four’s show, either as an addendum after your article, or incorporated into your article in an engaging way.
