Lady Gaels Sweep Zags in Weekend Volleyball Matches

COLLEGIAN: November 8, 2011

By Dominic Smith

The Saint Mary’s volleyball team had their way with the Gonzaga bulldogs this weekend, beating them at home in three straight sets (25-15, 25-12, 26-24). This feat wouldn’t have been possible without their star blockers Natalie Loos and Gabby Jolly, who led their team with 10 and 11 kills each.

The Gael’s (13-12/7-6 WCC) defense was a force to be reckoned with, tallying 49 kills compared to the Zag’s 26 kills on the afternoon. Natalie Loos, the anchor for the team, had an outstanding .692 hitting percentage and five blocks on the day. Loos was not the only team member ready to play as Lauren Corp racked up nine kills and seven digs. Samantha Tinsley wasn’t far behind with eight kills and five blocks. Missy White wouldn’t leave the court without making her mark with a match-high of 41 assists to compliment her five kills, five digs and two aces.

The Bulldogs (7-17/1-12 WCC) tried to keep up with their strongest force, Kylie Edinger, putting seven kills and three blocks on the board. Setter Denise Van De Mortel put in her share of work, finishing with 20 assists and four digs.

The Gaels walked over the Zags in their first two games of the match, winning by over ten points, putting them in a comfortable lead. The bulldogs couldn’t put anything together in those first two sets, hitting under .100. In the third set, the Zags came out with a vengeance, jumping ahead with a 6-0 lead. The Gaels weren’t going to give up with one match left to win. They rallied back and tied it up at 13’s with an ace by Mileva Popovic. The game went down to the last point, but Corp finished the Zags off with a kill, forcing an attack error for Gonzaga.

The Gaels will try to continue their seven game winning streak when they host BYU at 7:00 p.m. in a WCC match.
